Keeping a journal or sketchbook is an essential tool for artists of any media. To be an artist means one must pay attention. Art is about you observing the world you move through, listening to your personal thoughts and reactions to your world and interpreting that world in your creations.

There are many ways to use a visual journal. It can be used for observing, recording, storing, researching, collecting, experimenting, exploring, expressing, imagining, inventing and designing.

There are NO RULES in keeping a journal. You can use words or no words, sketch, paint, glue, collage, stamp, fuse, stitch or distress. Your journal can be any size or shape you find useful. It is YOURS! No one can tell you how to do it “right”. You can share it if you want to but you don’t have to. Your journal can have a theme, simply be a chronicle of your days and your art experiments or it can be a place to explore the dark places in your soul. It is up to you.

All materials included.

Nothing compares to the lustrous color and feel of silk. In this class, we will create silk paper that is also a fabric! We use luscious hand dyed silk hankies, roving and rods.  A wet laminating process allows us to layer fibers to create beautiful ethereal fabrics for embellishment as well as thicker fabric suitable for substrates and vessels. You will have the option of making a small bowl. You will make 4-6 sheets of delicious silk fabric/paper for your fabric and mixed media art. Use these silk papers in collage, as embellishment, journal covers and vessels.

Discover the delights of creating your own unique papers and fabrics with a combination of gelatin plate mono-printing and screen printing. Gelatin plate printing is a fun and easy method of mono-printing that results in surprises and delights. We will use both the traditional gelatin plate and the new Gelli Plate. Create unique textures and patterns using found objects (aka-junk), stamps, stencils and resists or masks. Screen printing uses a fine mesh screen to create graphic images on fabric or paper. We will explore traditional screen printing as well as thermofax screen printing techniques. We use some of the same found objects, stencils and resists to create a one of a kind delectable cloth or to layer on top of our gelatin printed fabric. Class supply fee of $20 covers paints and tools, gelatin plates and screens
